Now…..Where Have We Seen THIS Before???
Herman Cain--------2011 Preston Tucker----------1948
Once upon a time in America, there was a man with a vision, named Preston Tucker, who when he saw the war clouds looming over Europe, designed & built a bullet-proof combat car, that went over 100 mph and carried a turret-mounted 50 caliber machine gun.
It was turned down because the War Department's policy at that time, was that no combat vehicle should go over 35 mph......they DID adopt his turret though, and they were mounted on B-17's.
Well, knowing that the first thing Americans wanted after the war were new cars, he decided to build the safest and finest car there was, instead of "business as usual" from Detroit.
Through good advertising, he managed to sell a lot of stocks and starting with an old car to use as the basis for a prototype, he started building the "car of tomorrow." It was not to be the actual car, but a prototype to show the people, to get more financial backing.
The prototype was "drop-dead" GORGEOUS, as they say, the investor-money rolled in and they started building the actual car.
It would be a rear-engined car, powered by a modified Franklin helicopter motor----very reliable and extremely powerful. There was much advertising hype, but like with Herman Cain, nobody took Tucker seriously at first........so nobody WORRIED about Tucker.
But as they started being produced and tested, word leaked out that Tucker DID-IN-FACT have something that would have forced the "Big Three" of Detroit to have to spend millions just to try to keep up. The car was capable of 20 mpg and 130+ mph, which was moving right along in 1948!
The car had a simple, efficient instrument cluster, padded dash, lots of room in the front compartment for luggage and that rear-mounted helicopter engine provided all the power one could handle.
The most cosmetically-noticeable feature was the "middle-headlight", that turned with the front wheels to let you see around curves at night before you got there. The "years ahead styling" and TRACK TESTS now had Detroit's undivided attention. The car was GOOD............TOO GOOD and "something had to be done about it.
Things were going too well for Detroit profit-wise, to sit back and allow some "upstart" from Ypsilanti, Michigan....to start "rocking any boats".............does THAT sound familiar here in 2011?
Suddenly out of nowhere, here came the SEC (Security & Exchange Commission). They raided the plant, confiscated files that were needed for daily operation. Stories of FRAUD and "mis-appropriated stock money "magically" found their way into the papers, and before long, Preston Tucker found himself in Federal court for stock fraud, with the prosecution saying the whole thing was just a "scheme" to get money, and that he never intended to build any cars at all.
On the day his trial began, Tucker had his people park all FIFTY of them on the main streets, right outside of the courthouse. But by the time of his trial, the media had done its job, all of the investors were gone, and the plant was confiscated by the government.
Every charge against him was false and the Grand Jury didn't take long to AQUIT him! The "Big Three" (GM, Chrysler & Ford) had unlimited capital to wage this war and they knew ALREADY that they had no case because Tucker had never deceived ANYBODY.......he BUILT the car he said he would, and there were FIFTY of them downstairs outside, waiting for the judge and the jurors to see. Detroit already KNEW it was a lost case........but it was worth the money to run Tucker out of money and support.....to keep that car from causing them the SERIOUS competition it would have been.
You see.........people believe what they read in the papers, even if they DON'T believe it.......which doesn't make much sense, but if ENOUGH newspapers SAY you're a crook...........it's usually enough to finish you.........and that's all they WANTED to accomplish.
Preston Tucker died in 1956 from stomach cancer, but most of his cars are still on the road 63 years later, with a few being in museums. It turned out to be a BETTER car than he had promised, but thanks to Detroit and the media, very few will ever get to enjoy one. I've seen 7 of them in person. They are magnificent.
Power.....power......greed and power........."don't let this guy "rock the boat"
.....and in 1948, they didn't. .........."Buckshot" is right on the money.......not much has changed. Let's hope the people can actually think for THEMSELVES this time and see through their OWN eyes, instead of the agenda'd media's.
