  • Years ago I met a german national, who had emmigrated to the US following WWII. Prior to the War, he was a young adult.

His viewpoint of pre-war Germany was different from what was published in the US. I found his most interesting point being that Hitler was dead-set against incurring any debt in his country. Although the People's car" was available, the average citizen could not afford to buy it, without going into debt. The solution was that they would make installment payments and when enough money was accumulated, the car would be delivered.

On another matter, he was a crewman on a Junkers bomber in the Luftwaff. He described how they would fly for 4 hours over the North Sea to the target, drop their one torpedo and fly back to Germany to get another torpedo.

Incidently, the vehicle that VW marketed as the "Thing" was actually a take-off from the German army's version of our Jeep.

  • My experience with the Bug, was living at 8000 feet elevation, west of Denver, and commuting to Golden at 5000 feet elevation. During the winter, the problem was basically coasting the +20 miles down the 3000 foot hill. An air cooled engine doesn't generate much heat during those conditions, and the heater/defroster air came from the exhaust manifold. It frequently required scraping the frost buildup from the inside of the windshield. in order to see the road. Winter driving and the Bug did have some problems.
