Most kids get a 22 at young age but the first gun I got was a 20 gauge shotgun, bolt action with a polly choke. Took me a long time saving to be able to buy it. Then when I came back from SEA I purchased a 22/22 mag pistol and holster. Somebody stole that one back in the 80's and they found it 2 years later in a pawn shop in Ok city.

In the mean time I purchased a Ruger Super blackhawk 357 mag. I did get a 22 rifle back in the 80's sometime very nice shooting it. My Dad got me a 32 special lever action when I was in high school for deer hunting and I put a 4x scope on it cause I never could see the horns on a buck without it LOL. Haven't fired any of mine for about 20 years now. Your so right about the 30/30 and the 32 special in taking down more deer than any other gun especially back east.

  • Don't be so quick to assume some stupid anti gun nut wont show up and give you grief. I've done some shooting and even owned a nice over/under 12ga. Someday I'll share why I don't have guns. Everybody have a great rest of the day and see you tomorrow sometime.

  • If the truth be known, the lowly little .22 has killed far more deer than any other caliber.

I'll explain; the .22 and the ammunition, as you said, has always been cheap. The rifles are quiet and very accurate, with only head shots and under 70yds it's either a clean kill or a miss. From the turn of the century until after WWII good old boys fed their families year round that way, especially during the depression. I'm sure it still goes on today. Most land in the south and east is private and for those folks that didn't know someone they hunted the railroad rights of way which they still do today.

The .22 deserves a whole lot of respect, although it didn't win the west and wasn't a deciding factor in any great battles, it has fed a lot of people in season and out.

Foot Note: I don't condone poaching just passing along what I've learned.

  • I' 27 years old and the first thing i remember shooting was a .22 at age 5, yes 5. My father gave me that little .22 rifle that year for my birthday the same his father gave him and the same that I'll pass to my son some day. I still love shooting that thing-good clean fun- As far as my wife goes couldn't agree more this article it was the first thing she shot along with my little .22 target pistol and has worked her way up to shooting my dad's peacemaker!!!
