I'd Rather Have a Governor
If you ask most Democrats who their favorite President has been over the last 30 years or so, most will tell you without blinking an eye, it was Bill Clinton. Even Obama asked him for help recently.
Bring that same question to one of US, and the name Ronald Reagan will surface immediately.
Both men have the stats to back it up, too. And while they were each on different ends of the political stick, they both shared one common denominaor. They were BOTH GOVERNORS first.
When you really give it some thought, there is pretty sound evidence out there to suggest that a governor----(as a rule)----SHOULD make a better president than a senator or congressman.
A governor runs an entire state------economy and all. A senator runs nothing but his mouth.
Senators (and Congressmen) cast votes during sessions, then scurry back into the "crowd" of their cohorts. If its a vote on a significant issue, he might draw a little fire from the press, but it doesn't attract the heat like a GOVERNOR'S signature on a bill.
Example.....right here in Idaho..........if you don't like how something is, Otter will most often be the first target----not Crapo or Labrador. It's like that in every state. I've often wondered why Arnold took that job in California, with that bag of snakes HE had to work with out there.
A governor basically has the same duties as the president.....but on a smaller scale. Like the president, he TOO has the economy to deal with and be RESPONSIBLE for. A senator does not.
Any bill that affects his state.....HIS is the FINAL (and ACCOUNTABLE) signature......and the people will HOLD him to it.
If the State Guard units need to be called out......or there's a natural disaster in his state..........HE deals with it...not "Congressman Joe Blow."
In a capitol punishment state, a GOVERNOR literally holds the power over life & death. A terrific responsibility. He also has the power to "pardon".........either way, he'd better be right, or there WILL be repercussions.
A governor is held responsible for forest mangement....the BORDERS.....and state security.....the state police.....civil defense (a BIG thing in a state like Alaska with the Russians just over the pond).
Governors already HAVE to deal with the same kinds of things that presidents are expected to.
Voters in all 50 states hold their governors to the fire, when in a lot of cases...........SOME people don't even KNOW who their senators and congressmen are! Right HERE, if that certain "appropriations money" for your pet project isn't available..........doesn't matter what Crapo or Labrador might have said or done...........it's OTTER's fault!
And maybe it WAS. But a governor.....ANY governor, holds CONSIDERABLY more responsibility than any senator or congressman.
As 2012 looms upon us, I hope we HAVE a good governor running for the White House. A good FORMER governor who doesn't have to fight off the snoops, the spies, the family attacks and everything else, while they STILL have to run a state at the same time......someone who can freely campaign on their OWN time, not the taxpayer's.
I would LOVE to see another governor as president. Someone who already knows what it's all about, because it's pretty hard to "govern" ANYTHING, if you've never had to.
"Responsibility and Accountability" are not in a senator's job description. He's free to "go play" when his "shift" is over. Most governors are still burning the late night oil, because the entire population of his/her state DEPENDS on it.
A governor has to balance his state's budget......he doesn't get to sit in congress, appease his lobbyist, vote for pork, then scramble to safety. His constituents HOLD HIM ACCOUNTABLE. He doesn't get to vote "present", either! (yeah, that's a "dig", but it's also a FACT that most of this counry didn't think was important a few years ago.)
I'd rather be on an operating table in the hands of a skilled surgeon.....than a practicing intern, wouldn't you?
Huckabee hasn't announced, but I sure hope he does.
Palin needs to go fishing. She doesn't need to expose her whole family to that same pack of liberal media goons again.
Man, I've spent a little time in Alaska....if I was governor of THAT state, I'd push for secession and DIVEST my people of this lunacy and corruption down HERE!
I think he'd have the support of the majority up there as well..........most people LIVE in Alaska, so they don't have to live HERE. If you've ever been up there, you've seen some of the reasons.
Not EVERY governor would make a good president, and we just saw 8 years of THAT.....and 4 years of Carter.........
But QUALIFICATION-wise...........I think MOST governors are better equipped to handle EXECUTIVE DECISION-MAKING duties, than most Senators or Congressmen.
Please correct me if I'm wrong (and I KNOW you will!!)......but wasn't it Joe Biden HIMSELF, who in a Primary Debate with Obama.......said that this was "NO PLACE FOR ON-THE-JOB TRAINING?"
(not that HE is qualified to run anything.....he can't even stay awake!)
Senators...........both of 'em..........'nuff said.
