G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra
The real American heroes, G.I. Joe are back in G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra.
In the film, Duke (Channing Tatum) and Ripcord (Marlon Wayans) while leading a group of Army soldiers tasked with delivering four nuclear warheads, their convoy is attacked by a mysterious ship trying to steal the warheads, the group is led by the Baroness (Sienna Miller).
A twist in the story is revealed when the Baroness is recognized as Duke's lost fiancee. Duke and Ripcord are later rescued by G.I. Joe members Scarlett (Rachel Nichols), Snake Eyes (Ray Park) and Heavy Duty (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje).
The group then transports Duke, Ripcord and the warheads to the pit, to meet with the head of the G.I. Joe team, General Hawk (Dennis Quaid).
The Baroness, along with Storm Shadow (Lee Byung-Hun) and Zartan (Arnold Vosloo) is tasked by James McCullen, the creator of the four warheads, to retrieve the warheads to pursue their plan of bringing about a new world order with army of soldiers with the same nanotechonology he used to built his warheads with the aid of the Doctor (Joseph Gordon-Levitt).
When the warheads are taken, G.I. Joe seeks out to stop the plans of Cobra, but unknown to the Joe's, Cobra organizes a secondary plan, and not to give anything away, could be a clue to a possible sequel.
Going into this movie, I felt that the action sequences were going to corrupt the story and make the film just one big mess, but as a fan of the cartoon as a kid, It made me think back to the cartoon, almost the same feeling as I had watching the original Transformers film.
The film was well cast, Quaid was solid as the grizzled veteran Hawk, Tatum and Wayans stood out in their first action movie and of course for the guys, Sienna Miller, wow what a choice for the Baroness.
On a side note, I was impressed with Wayans, whose known highly for comedy, who was great as Ripcord, he proved me wrong with his performance.
I'm going out on a limb, even though most critics I've seen might not agree with this, G.I. Joe is better than the Transformers sequel. Unlike the Transformers sequel, G.I. Joe didn't have to exceed two hours and use the occasional toilet humor.
The film proves to be a highly revamped adaptation of the popular animated series, just like Transformers.
I wouldn't rate G.I. Joe over Star Trek for best action movie, however it is a much better movie than the critics are claiming and with the twist at the end of the film, I'm curious to see if the Joes come back for a sequel.
DID YOU KNOW: Rachel Nichols who plays Scarlett in G.I. Joe, also played Gaila, Uhura's roommate in Star Trek.
Well you've read my review, now see what my fellow critic, Trevin Conley thought of G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra.
