Countdown: Top 5 Keesler Films (Movies I saw in Biloxi)
(Next time on the Reel Revue, will be my review for Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian starring Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson and Amy Adams)
1. I Love You Man
Quite possibly, the funniest movie I saw in Biloxi and of the year so far was I Love You Man, in the film Paul Rudd plays, Peter Klaven, a real estate agent who decides to tie the knot with his girlfriend, Zooey played by Rashida Jones.
Once the marriage plans begin, Rudd realizes that he has no male best friends to be considered as a best man, so he goes on a series of mandates until he meets Sydney Fife, played by Rudd's Forgetting Sarah Marshall co-star Jason Segel as the friendship ensued, the hilarity got better and better.
Despite some unnecessary raunchiness, this movie was just funny from beginning to end, good enough that I actually saw the movie three times in Biloxi.
2. Monsters vs. Aliens 3D
Last year's animated hits included Bolt, Kung Fu Panda and Oscar winner, this year kicked off with the 3D blockbuster Monsters vs. Aliens.
In the film, Susan Murphy (voiced by Reese Witherspoon) is preparing to marry her fiance Derek voice by Paul Rudd. At the church, Murphy gets struck with a meteroite and is turned into a giant 50 foot woman.
Murphy is then taken to a secret prison facility, where General W.R. Monger (voiced by Kiefer Sutherland) have locked up other monsters, including the Missing Link (voiced by Will Arnett), Dr. Cockroach (voiced by Hugh Laurie) and B.O.B. (voiced by Seth Rogen).
And also, how could you go wrong with Stephen Colbert as the President of the United States?
I've never been a fan of 3D films to be honest, but the animation was superb and the cast as a whole was hilarious.
3. Watchmen
A film, that gained early buzz, was Watchmen, what was deemed the most celebrated graphic novel of all time.
Watchmen is based on an alternate 1985, where costumed superheroes are regular members of society, when one of the Watchmen is mysteriously killed and his masked colleague Rorshack sets out to find his former colleagues to investigate the murder.
The story was good, the special effects was off the charts and the cast featured a lot of strong performances. I thought the material may have been a little too graphic and the twist at the end of the film wasn't so shocking.
4. Fast and Furious
After wastes like 2 Fast 2 Furious and Tokyo Drift, who would have though Fast and Furious would work, and yet it does.
The original cast from the very first film, (Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Michelle Rodriguez and Jordanna Brewster), is brought back to continue the story line from the first film, to be honest it made 2 Fast 2 Furious and Tokyo Drift utterly pointless.
I did enjoy the action sequences and racing scenes, also the surprise at the start of the movie kept me interested till the end. I just wish this would have been the second film instead of the fourth film.
5. Adventureland
For this final spot, it was a toss-up between Adventureland, Duplicity with Clive Owen and Julia Roberts or Observe and Report starring Seth Rogen.Adventureland, although lacked in heavy comedy, stood out from the other two films to round out the countdown.
In the film, set in 1987, recent college graduate James (Jesse Eisenberg) is forced to get a job at the Adventureland amusement park to help raise money for college.
While working at Adventureland, James has several painful learning experiences about life, trust and especially love with his co-worker Emily played by Twilight's Kristen Stewart.
Superbad director Greg Mottola delivered a film that wasn't on the same level of comedy as Superbad, but it featured some decent comedic moments especially from SNL'ers Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig who play the owners of Adventureland and a strong performance from Stewart.
I would have to say the film was a little too dark and of all things, Ryan Reynolds, an actor whose has shown a charismatic personality in all of his films was a bore to watch in this film.
