(FIRST REVIEW OF 2009) Bedtime Stories
Adam Sandler and Walt Disney, two things you wouldn't expect to come together and make a good motion picture, and with Sandler coming off of consecutive bombs Click, I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry and You Don't Mess With The Zohan.
But with Bedtime Stories, it turned out to be a pretty decent family movie.
In Bedtime Stories, Sandler plays Skeeter Bronson, a handyman whose working for his late father's hotel, waiting for the opportunity to one day run his family's business. When the opportunity comes of a brand new hotel, manager Barry Nottingham chooses his son-in law Kendall (Guy Pearce) instead of Skeeter.
Skeeter down on his luck, is then left with the responsibility of taking care of her sister's (Courtney Cox-Arquette) kids.
Once Skeeter begins telling very lavish bedtime stories to the kids about the Wild West and Outer Space, oddly enough the stories he tells, aided by the kids, miraculously come true.
I hate to say it but Sandler's string of flops may have come to an end, in this movie he put on a pretty solid performance hiding his usual buffoonery, which seems to take up most of his recent characters, and provided the film with a lovable character that you want to see win or be the hero, and not a boneheaded character that audiences laugh at rather than cheer for.
The film also featured a great performance from Russell Brand, who amazingly after coming off his adult oriented diatribe at this year's MTV VMA's, was hilarious as Skeeter's best friend Mickey.
The stories told by Sandler, each of those scenes were entertaining, borderline goofy, but I still say fun for kids to watch.
