Celebrity Guest Hosts in WWE
WWE head honcho Vince McMahon has implemented numerous concepts over the years to garner rating for his programs, but none may be create more rating let you alone media buzz, then introducing celebrity guest hosts to run his flagship show Monday Night RAW.
Several weeks ago, (based on the storyline), RAW owner Donald Trump declared that RAW would no longer have a general manager to run the show, but instead will be run by a guest host who will have as equal power as a GM. According to Trump, the guest host could be a celebrity, a diplomat, the man on the street or a WWE superstar.
Again, based on the storyline, Vince McMahon purchased RAW back from Trump and in his usual mimicking form, took Trump's idea and ran with it.
McMahon began the slew of hosts with one of his top superstars Dave Batista, immediately followed by WWE legend "The Million Dollar Man" Ted DiBiase.
Following DiBiase, the celebrity hosts began with Seth Green from TV's "Family Guy", who opened the show promoting the upcoming season of his show "Robot Chicken" with Triple H who stars in the season premiere.
As guest host, Seth Green "booked" matches that included a six diva swimsuit match and of all things himself in the main event teaming with Triple H and John Cena against Legacy (Randy Orton, Cody Rhodes and Ted Dibiase, Jr.)
The match was ruled a no contest, and Green barely got involved in the match until the final pin fall where Orton, the top heel in the WWE, was about to attack Green when he was saved by his teammates.
Next week's show was hosted by Billy Gibbons and Dusty Hill from the Hall of Fame rock group "ZZ Top."
Throughout the night, ZZ Top's classic tracks were used in promos with superstars Santino Marella and Chris Jericho and matches themed off such tracks as "Legs" (a diva tag team match) and "Sharp Dressed Man" (a tuxedo match between Chavo Guerrero and Hornswaggle).
The biggest and I do mean biggest host so far, was last night's host and future NBA Hall of Famer Shaquille O'Neal.
Shaq booked Beat The Clock matches with five superstars (John Cena, HHH, MVP, Mark Henry and Jack Swagger) in singles matches, the superstar who defeated their opponent in the quickest amount of time would be dubbed the #1 contender for the WWE Title at Summerslam. Cena would win the contest at the end of the night defeating his opponent, The Miz (Mike Mizanin formerly of MTV's "Real World") in 4:28 seconds surpassing the time of 6:49 set by Mark Henry.
As the night began, Shaq addressed the crowd in Washington, with the unpopular line, "I just wanted to tell you all, my new teammate LeBron James said 'Hello'." A line that didn't sit well with the Wizard fans.
Shaq would later cut promos with superstars Chris Jericho (referred to him as "Christina") and The Big Show (referred to him as "Fat Boy"), Shaq challenged The Big Show to a match later on in the night, when Big Show refused, Shaq booked both Show and Jericho in a tag team match in the main event against Cryme Tyme (tag team from Friday Night Smackdown), with Shaq serving as the special guest enforcer (a referee on the outside of the ring).
Throughout the night, Shaq would cut some hilarious scenes including playing Scrabble with Santino Marella, and a scene with Hornswaggle, where Shaq said "We went to High School together."
Sure enough, ESPN aired the footage on Sportscenter, with Shaq going toe to toe with The Big Show at the beginning of the night and getting involved in the main event shoving Big Show out of the ring.
This gimmick, according to sources, will yet to conclude, as McMahon has received numerous phone calls from celebrities who want to serve as the boss of cable TV's longest episodic show, Monday Night Raw.
Whose next, star of "Entourage" and the upcoming film "The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard," Jeremy Piven.
Who knows how long this storyline will continue, but being a fan of pro wrestling that I am, I can't wait for the upcoming weeks of RAW. The only thing I am concerned about, is that each host except for Shaq, Batista and Dibiase were promoting their upcoming shows, tours, or movies, I hope this gimmick doesn't turn the show that I've watched since it's inception back in 1994 into a Late Night Talk Show.
