Vick and Favre: Who plays first?
Leading into the 2009 NFL season, the two major stories involve players who are not even active players, Michael Vick and Brett Favre.
Favre, who yet again has kept the press world in limbo, with the whole "Will He Play" or "Won't He Play" story.
After a subpar year, last season with the Jets, Favre decided to retire yet again due to a shoulder injury. Several interviews later, the rumors began about how Brad Childress, coach of the Minnesota Vikings, have had talks about a possible comeback with Brett and how the Vikings medical staff have checked on Favre and the condition of his shoulder.
For the Packer faithful, this move almost seems sacrilegious, to have the man who led the Pack to two Super Bowls, lead one of the team's long-time rival, granted this move would make Minnesota an absolute contender to take the NFC and prove the critics right who say Minnesota is a "Super Bowl" team based on their defense led by 16-sack man Jared Allen, AP (Adrian Peterson) at running back and Bernard Berrian leading the wide receivers, the only problem is at quarterback with both Tavaris Jackson and free-agent pickup Sage Rosenfels.
Brett's agenda behind this move, is anybody's guess, could it be that he still has the urge to play the game he has excelled at for his entire 16 year career, or does he want to stick to the man, that being Packer GM Ted Thompson who unceremoniously let Brett go to move on to their now starting quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
Hopefully, by the end of this month, we will finally have end to this Brett Favre madness?
Now for Michael Vick, who you might remember, has just recently been released from prison after his two sentence for dog fighting charges.
Vick, who at the time was the NFL's highest paid player, had recently filed for Chapter 11 reorganization bankruptcy, his case has yet to be resolved.
Falcons owner Arthur Blank has publically stated that he wished the best for Michael Vick, but he would no longer want Vick on his team, sure now that he has Matt Ryan whose stellar rookie year led the Falcons to the playoffs last season.
Vick was released by the team in June, due to several attempts in trading him failed.
In my view, everybody should get a second chance, Michael Vick is in no way in the same league as Adam "Pacman" Jones whose career fits under the category "Trainwreck."
Sure Vick may not get the chance to be a starter for a contender or any NFL team, but while in prison, Vick did take time to work out to prepare for his eventual comeback.
The nuance play for the NFL, based off of last season's success is the Wildcat implemented by the Dolphins. Vick could be utilized for several teams who are using this play, he could easily be a backup for numerous teams, I wouldn't mind having him with the 49ers, but the 49ers recently stated they are out of the Vick running (nice move, guys).
I still believe that of all the owners that will make a full court press (I now this a football blog, but I couldn't help not using a basketball reference), to get Michael Vick is Jerry Jones, owner of the Dallas Cowboys.
Jones who has been desperate to win a championship since the days of Aikman, Irvin and Emmitt, may no longer accept that Tony Romo the man who he spent over $50 million to sign, could not bring any success in the postseason.
I wouldn't be surprised if the Cowboys, who some say after the loss of Terrell Owens, may be on the outside looking in as far as the NFC playoffs, that's why Jones may sign Vick to put added pressure on Romo.
Vick has recently met with DeMaurice Smith, the executive director of the National Football League Players' Association (NFLPA), to talk about his future, this meeting afterward will be the focus of the eventual between Vick and NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.
Who plays first, I say Vick, I think you will see him back on an NFL field sooner than later, as of Favre, just make up your mind, retire and take your rightful place in Canton as a Hall of Famer.
UPDATE: Reportedly, Goodell after speaking with Vick will consider reinstating Vick, however will suspend Vick for the first four games of the '09 season, if Vick signs with another team.
Apparently Brett is conflicted, but he has talked with Viking players such as Adrian Peterson and Jared Allen who have said they both want Favre on their team. Favre stated that if wasn't for talking to the Viking players, he would be leaning towards not returning.
