Twilight sweeps MTV Movie Awards: Surprise, Surprise, Surprise
It was not long ago, that I reviewed the nominations for last night's MTV Movie Awards, and predicted that Twilight would win the key awards they were nominated for because and not to negate the show as a whole, but it is influenced by the teenage vote.
During the show, every time Twilight was mentioned in the naming of nominations, it was like the audience was taken over by a pack of screaming teenage girls no matter what the category, almost making it clear who the winner of the award was going to be.
But first, I got to acknowledge Andy Samburg who was great as the host of the Movie Awards. Samburg has come a long way from being a writer for the awards to host. The rap he cut at the beginning of the show, especially when he tried to hit on "Transformers" star Megan Fox, hilarious.
The big award, that Twilight won was for Best Movie. The field that Twilight beat included Ironman, The Dark Knight, Slumdog Millionaire and why I'll never know High School Musical 3.
In any other award show, how does Twilight beat Ironman, Dark Knight or the film that actually won a deserving Best Picture award, Slumdog Millionaire.
It was obvious, of the final vote, when MTV opened the voting for Best Movie, throughout the show so the Team Edward fans could text on their cell phones to help pad Twilight's victory.
Who should have won the award in my view, was The Dark Knight, a stellar film with brilliant acting from Christian Bale and Heath Ledger. But why shouldn't that be recognized.
Best Male Performance--Zac Efron "High School Musical 3"
An award presentation that led to the most awkward moment and what may go down as one of the most memorable moments in Movie Award history.
Sacha Baron Cohen, star of the upcoming "Bruno", was the presenter, and by presenter I mean winged presenter. Cohen, who was harnessed and donned an angels outfit, flew toward the stage until a sudden mishap occurred, and Cohen slowly came down toward the audience and awkardly landed on of all people, rapper Eminem, who was fresh off his performance of "Crack A Bottle" and "We Made You".
Obviously, Eminem was furious and aided by his entourage hoisted Cohen off of Eminem as Eminem stormed out of the arena. The event went so long, that Cohen immediately announced the winner of the award, that being Efron.
Efron, who beats the more deserving Christian Bale for the Dark Knight or Robert Downey, Jr. for Ironman, again teen vote influence anyone.
Efron also beat out, Shia LaBeouf for "Eagle Eye" and Vin Diesel for "Fast and Furious."
Best Female Performance-Kristen Stewart, "Twilight"
This is an award, that Twilight won, that I actually agree with. I think Stewart is a great actress, whose has come a long way from her debut role in Panic Room.
Stewart beat out a field that included Angelina Jolie for "Wanted", Taraji P. Henson for "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Anne Hathaway for "Bride Wars" and the Oscar winner for Best Actress Kate Winslet for "The Reader."
Breakthrough Performance Male-Robert Pattinson, "Twilight"
This an award, that I could of agreed with, but fellow nominee Bobb'e J. Thompson for "Role Models" stood out to me even more than nominee Dev Patel for "Slumdog Millionaire, and I felt Thompson should have won this award.
Pattinson did also beat out Ben Barnes for "Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian" and his fellow Twilight cast mate Taylor Lautner.
Breakthrough Performance Female-Ashley Tisdale "High School Musical 3"
This award just should have been the Disney award, not only was Tisdale nominated but her co-star Vanessa Hudgens and Miley Cyrus for "Hannah Montana: The Movie" were nominated as well. (Cyrus won Best Song for "The Climb" later in the show)
In an fair-based award vote, Freida Pinto for "Slumdog Millionaire" would and should have won the award.
Best Comedic Performance-Jim Carrey "Yes Man"
The MTV Movie Awards have given the most popcorn awards in their history to Jim Carrey. I'm glad he won, but fellow nominee Steve Carell stole the show as Maxwell Smart.
Carrey's acceptance speech, was great especially with the outer monologue and the use of his presenters of the award Will Ferrell and Danny McBride ("Land of the Lost").
But the end of his speech was great, as in his outer monologue he says, "Finally, I decided to say something, something I've been wanted to say for months, and then I said it: There would be no swine flu, if we treated the pigs better." I laughed hysterically.
In other awards, that Twilight won included "Best Kiss" (Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson) and "Best Fight" (Robert Pattinson and Cam Gigandet).
In recognizing, a true great performance from last year, the late Heath Ledger won Best Villain for his epic role of the Joker in "The Dark Knight."
