NFL off season (so far)
This year, several teams have already made big off season moves those teams included the New Orleans Saints, Denver Broncos and the Jacksonville Jaguars.
The Jaguars recently released star running back Fred Taylor due to his recent string of injury-plagued seasons, although he did agree to take a pay cut for this season. Now the two headed monster is no more between him and Maurice Jones Drew, who may thrive as the full time starter.
The Saints released running back Deuce McCallister, a move that the Saints may regret, because Reggie Bush is good, he is injury prone and in those games last year where Bush was injured, McCallister and Aaron Stecker both produced.
The Broncos, in a way to say let's go a totally new direction for this year, have already released five defensive starters, including all-pro Dre Bly, all I can say for this is, come on down to the 49ers, we can use a talent like Bly.
Who would have thought, the kicker would be such a valuable commodity?
The Lions, a team who needs a whole lot of help, ends up resigining their kicker Jason Hanson to a four year deal and the Bengals put their franchise tag on their kicker Shayne Graham, WOW
Speaking of the Bengals, as said in a recent interview, WR TJ Houshmanzadeh stated that he doesn't expect to be back next year, he also doesn't expect Chad Johnson to be back next year as well. Solution, TJ or Chad, come over to San Francisco, we haven't had a solid receiver in years.
According to rumors, Jeff Garcia may be out in Tampa, but there's a slim possibility he would go to a contender, the teams in line right now include the Bears, 49ers and the Lions who of all things resigned Daunte Culpepper for next season, yeah that was the right move, although he and Dan Orlovsky did absolutely nothing to help the team.
Some key free agents during this off season include:
Albert Haynesworth, Titans-Clearly, he is the anchor for the Titans unreal defense last year, they would be crazy to let him and fellow free agent Jevon Kearse go.
Ray Lewis, Baltimore Ravens-A former Super Bowl MVP, sure with a controversial past, but undeniably Lewis is one of, if not the best linebacker in the NFL and the heart and soul of the Ravens. With the Ravens, putting their franchise tag on fellow linebacker, Terrell Suggs, I wonder if they are even expecting Lewis to come back.
Randy Moss, New England Patriots-This should be a no-brainer, Moss has played his best years in New England, and unless New England thinks they could get quality elsewhere from an Anquan Boldin or TJ Houshmanzadeh, than Moss should be back with the Patriots next season.
Michael Turner, Atlanta Falcons-Who would have thought, that LT's backup, would have a better year than LT himself. Turner, came to the Atlanta Falcons in 08, on a mission to prove he belongs as one of the best running backs in the game, and with his near MVP season, aided the Falcons led by upstart rookie QB Matt Ryan into the playoffs this year. Falcons, sign him to a monster deal immediately.
Marion Barber, Dallas Cowboys-This move I would think would be easy for the Cowboys in bringing Barber back, but the way Jerry Jones runs that franchise, I think he is going to be so oblivious to realize what he would lose, that he would end up letting him go and taking his chances on Felix Jones next year.
Unfortunately, the quarterback market isn't all that great, headlined by apparent one year wonder Derek Anderson of the Cleveland Browns and Gus Frerotte of the Minnesota Vikings.
One quarterback that should be given a long term deal, is obviously Kurt Warner, where would the Cardinals have been this season without Warner, and where would they have ended up if they stayed with Matt Leinart, who if you ask me I can decide who is going to end up like Ryan Leaf, Leinart or Vince Young.
On a final note, I read off the ESPN ticker last night, that Mike Singletary, coach of my 49ers, did not rule out the possibility of his team going after former Falcons QB Michael Vick. This move, would benefit the 49ers, but do they really want a player with such baggage, to come on a team who may be back from a cellar dwelling team to a contender. Although, picking him up and having him as a backup may serve as a challenge for current (and should-be starter for next season) Shaun Hill to step up his game.
