Rourke pins the field at the Golden Globes
Mickey Rourke, who most may remember for his early roles in 9 1/2 Weeks and Diner and his more current roles in Sin City and Domino, solidfied his comeback by winning the Golden Globe award for Best Actor for his role in Darren Aranofsky's "The Wrestler."
Rourke defeated a field that included Leonardo DiCaprio for "Revolutionary Road", Sean Penn for "Milk", Frank Langella for "Frost/Nixon" and Brad Pitt for "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.
In "The Wrestler", Rourke plays professional wrestler Randy "The Ram" Robinson who wrestles for die hard New Jersey fans in high school gyms and community centers, after making a living as a big star in the late 80's.
After a heart attack forces Robinson into an early retirement, Robinson decides to gets his life back together by working things out with his estranged daughter played by Evan Rachel Wood and falling in love with an exotic dancer played by Marisa Tomei.
But while retired, Robinson's passion for the art he left behind compels into a possible comeback.
I've been a wrestling fan since I was 10 years old, and I have to witness lately the black clouds cast over professional wrestling with the various drug scandals, the tragic deaths of Owen Hart and Eddie Guerrero and the horrific story of Chris Benoit.
At last, professional wrestling has something positive to look back on. I want to see this movie, but am unable to find a theater in Idaho where it is playing.
What does the head honcho of WWE, Vince McMahon feel about The Wrestler, well obviously, he hated it. I was surprised he didn't try to pull this movie from theaters like he tried to do with the documentary Beyond The Mat, of which he provided an interview.
Is it just me, or does Rourke seem like the Robert Downey, Jr. of 2009, the actor that was plagued by his drug and alcoholic past, but after two blockbusters, Tropic Thunder and Ironman, Downey is back on the Hollywood map.
Ironically enough, what is Rourke's next project, playing as Downey's nemesis in the upcoming Ironman 2.
A little Did You Know factoid, Rourke wasn't the first actor asked for The Wrestler, Nicolas Cage was. Cage did research for the role by going to Ring of Honor shows, Cage would later turn the role down, then stepped in Rourke and the rest is movie history.
