World Baseball Waste
To me, the worst idea to bring back interest to Major League Baseball, is the World Baseball Classic, an Olympic like competition where 16 teams from around the world square off in a double elimination tournament, with the finals taking place at Dodger Stadium.
This is a tournament that proved not so fun for the United States playing in 2006, having to deal with teams like the Dominican Republic with Albert Pujols, David Ortiz, Vladimir Guerrero and Jose Reyes.
Also several other teams featured well-known stars including Jason Bay and Justin Morneau (Canada), Carlos Zambrano (Venezuela), New York Mets teammates Carlos Delgado and Carlos Beltran (Puerto Rico)and now retired catcher Mike Piazza who played for Team Italy.
The United States had a pretty stacked team in 2006, having outfielders like Ken Griffey, Jr and Matt Holliday, infielders like Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter and pitchers like Jake Peavy, Roger Clemens and the man behind saving the clinching game for the Phillies in this year's World Series Brad Lidge.
But unlike the dominance shown by this year's Redeem Team, in 06, the World caught up to USA baseball.
I doubt very highly last year's event got any ratings what so ever, no one cared to see Japan led by Ichiro and Daisuke Matsuzaka win the Finals over Cuba.
What about injuries, any big name involved in this thing gets hurt, and it drastically affects their team's chances during the regular season.
I'm sorry there's only one baseball worldly tournament, that matters, oh yeah it's called the Olympics.
