The idea behind Robert's Random is for me to write about whatever I'm thinking about whenever I'm thinking it. I try to write 3-5 times a week, but sometimes real work gets in the way of that. Sometimes I'll share whatever random thought I might have that day but most of the time, I like to write about things going on in the news. I'm a total news junkie, I spend a lot of time online at various news sites. If I find a story where someone does something totally stupid or I wonder "what were they thinking?" I don't mind pointing it out incase others missed it or taking my best guess at what they were thinking. I like to laugh, I like to make others laugh. There's so much serious and wrong stuff going on in the news that when I find an unusual or light story, I like to use it. And while real life news events might be the focus of many of my blogs, I'm just trying to entertain you, make you laugh and maybe even think about something you didn't know before reading. I'm not trying to break any serious news or deliver any hard-hitting coverage. You'll have to read a paper or watch one of the network shows for that.
A month without Walmart: Day one: A visit there and the $ store
My month without shopping at Walmart began with a trip to the store. However, unlike most trips there, I didn't buy anything and instead left the store with more money in my pocket then when I entered.
Since I cancelled my services with Century Link last week, I had an extra telephone laying around my office I didn't need so I returned it to Walmart for a refund.
While I was standing in line to do so, I got a call from my brother-in-law asking me to pick him up a highlighter. Normally, getting such a request while standing in Walmart is easy to accommodate.
But since I'm refusing to shop at the store for a month, I felt a lot like that joke about being stupid enough to starve to death after getting locked in a grocery store. I was in the middle of a store that sells tons of highlighters and was unable to purchase one.
After I got my refund, I drove to one of the town's dollar stores to look for a highlighter. I was able to find three of them for $1. I'll have to see how well 33 cent highlighters work.
While I was at the dollar store, I walked around and was surprised at the large selection of items they have on sale there and all for a dollar. I'm pretty sure one could find everything they need to survive for a week from their selves alone.
I found a couple of items I needed for my office I'd been putting off getting just because I never actually think to get them when I'm at a store and some items I probably didn't really need but I thought I did anyways.
The best part about going to the dollar store and walking out with more things than you actually need is that the entire trip only costs about $7.
