The idea behind Robert's Random is for me to write about whatever I'm thinking about whenever I'm thinking it. I try to write 3-5 times a week, but sometimes real work gets in the way of that. Sometimes I'll share whatever random thought I might have that day but most of the time, I like to write about things going on in the news. I'm a total news junkie, I spend a lot of time online at various news sites. If I find a story where someone does something totally stupid or I wonder "what were they thinking?" I don't mind pointing it out incase others missed it or taking my best guess at what they were thinking. I like to laugh, I like to make others laugh. There's so much serious and wrong stuff going on in the news that when I find an unusual or light story, I like to use it. And while real life news events might be the focus of many of my blogs, I'm just trying to entertain you, make you laugh and maybe even think about something you didn't know before reading. I'm not trying to break any serious news or deliver any hard-hitting coverage. You'll have to read a paper or watch one of the network shows for that.
27 things that happened since the Miami Heat last lost a game.
Last night the Chicago Bulls beat the Miami Heat 101-97, ending the Heat's win streak at 27. Miami hadn't lost since a 102-89 beat down from the Indiana Pacers on February 1, or 54 days ago. The streak is the NBA's second longest. Here are 27 things that have happened or changed during the Heat's run at history:
1. Punxsutawney Phil didn't see his shadow.
2. The Baltimore Ravens won their second Super Bowl. Until last night, the 49ers had lost more recently than the Heat. Almost every team in the NFL had lost more recently than the Heat.
3. In the time it took the Heat to win 27 games, the Ravens lost eight starters from that Super Bowl squad, a league record.
4. Gas has gone up almost $0.40 a gallon.
5. No one knew who Florida Gulf Coast, the darlings of the NCAA March Madness tournament, was. The Eagles were 18-8 when the Heat's streak started. No idea what the odds of them making it to the Sweet 16 at the time were.
6. Justin Timberlake sold almost a million albums of his 20/20 CD. The album debuted on top of the Billboard charts, making him the sixth artist to score multiple number one albums as a solo artist and a member of a group. He joins Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison, Eminem, and Beyonce on the short list of artists to have accomplished that feat.
7. Pope Benedict XVI resigned/retired as head of the Catholic Church.
8. He was replaced by Pope Francis, the first Pope to use the name Francis.
9. A baby conceived the night after the Heat last lost would now be somewhere between the size of a blueberry and raspberry.
10. A baby conceived that same night would now be too old to be aborted in the state of North Dakota.
11. A body that died that same night would be nothing but bones by now. Fun fact: teeth and the jawbone take the longest to decompose and teeth can last for centuries.
12. Dan Auerbach and the Black Keys won four Grammies.
13. Jennifer Lawrence hadn't won an Oscar yet and Seth MacFarlane still had a chance of hosting the award show multiple times.
14. When Miami won their first of 27 games, Nick d'Aloisio was just another 17-year-old kid developing smartphone applications. Today he's just a 17-year-old kid with $30 million.
15. Rory McIlroy was the number one golfer in the world 54 days ago. Today it's Tiger Woods, who had just taken over the number two spot the first weekend of February.
16. Sequester was a word nobody really knew about yet.
17. The cast of "Boy Meets World" hadn't been together in more than a decade. Since the streak began, the gang has gotten back together and started filming a spinoff, "Girl Meets World."
18. Oscar Pistorius hadn't been charged with the murder of his girlfriend and was still best known for his work on the track as "the Blade Runner."
19. The Idaho Vandals women's basketball team was 10-12 on February 2. The Vandals would finish the season 17-16, win the WAC tournament and qualify for the NCAA tournament, where they lost to UCONN by 68.
20. Until today, the number of days John Kerry had been Secretary of State and the number of days since the Heat's last loss was exactly the same.
21. The same is true for the number of days it's been since Netflix tried to change the way we watch TV by releasing the highly addictive "House of Cards" at one time on its site.
22. When the Pacers beat the Heat, European customers could still buy horsemeat meatballs at IKEA . The Swedish furniture company claims it never sold horsemeat meatballs in the U.S.
23. The 1953 Armistice between North Korea and South Korea was still in effect.
24. Ohio Senator Rob Portman still opposed to same-sex marriage. The senator has since changed his stance on the issue when his son told him and his wife he was gay. He became the first Republican senator to announce his support for same-sex marriage. Fun fact: People who know someone that is homosexual are more likely to support same-sex marriages.
25. Only four Die Hard movies had been released to theaters at the time. "A good day to die harder" was released February 14, the series fifth installment.
26. There were no NASCAR drivers dating each other .
27. Since the Heat last lost, Taylor Swift broke up with four guys and wrote songs about each of them.
